TEACHERS

Welcome brave soul. Seeing as you are here I presume you are considering using Anatomy Arcade in the classroom and are either very excited or nervous about the prospect. As a teacher with a decade of teaching experience and the designer of these games, I am very confident you will find using the site a breath of innovative fresh air.

The "signature" series of games are the ones I have personally spent the greatest amount of time designing and testing to make sure the gameplay scaffolds the student's learning from novice to expert. As you know, the variations in assumed knowledge within one class alone can be quite a daunting obstacle to fluent teaching. I think you will be very pleasantly surprized by the ease with which the games engage the attention of even the most distracted student. In fact, it is these digital citizens who will respond in the most pronounced way as you begin presenting material in their native language.

There is still no substitute for hands-on practical sessions, demonstrations and dissections when it comes to teaching basic human anatomy, but as teachers, we can be quite narrow-minded when it comes to defining what is an educational vehicle. Computer games usually get a bad report card from teachers because in many cases they are seen as the enemy; time wasters that obstruct completion of homework. Teachers open to the use of games in class often come across pitfalls as most games are not designed to be used there. Anatomy Arcade games are designed with the classroom in mind. Students will be more than happy to play Whack-A-Bone for homework, especially if they can prove they can get a higher score than you!

Logistics

Now, all the games on the site are completely free to play. Just make sure you have access to computers that have access to the internet. It's a good idea to check a couple of things before you unleash a class onto the site.

Firstly, check that the school's network won't block kids accessing the site. This usually functions as a great protective measure, but in this case would spell disaster. Your network manager should be able to change the setting so that anatomyarcade.com is not blocked.

Secondly, it's a good idea to test the games out yourself so that you can confirm the suitability of a game for the body system you are currently teaching.

Thirdly, know which game you are using for that lesson and which games to use as a back-up for those who finish quickly.

Finally, remember that the ads are a necessary evil that allows the games to be played for free. If the ads are of concern or bandwidth is an issue for students, then you might want to consider purchasing a site license and get the games downloaded onto the computers ad free.
